Prepare examples from a variety of different parts of your life and think about your skills and competencies
Review your work experience
Plan your day:
It is recommended to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to an in-person interview
Confirm the time and location of your interview (if in person)
Know the name and role of whom you will meet
Dress for success – make sure you feel comfortable in your clothes (if in person)
Be sure to have copies of your resume
Step 2
Speak clearly, show your personality, stay focused on yourself, and sound positive and upbeat
Practice a strong handshake, good posture, and great eye contact. Avoid crossed arms, slouched backs, wandering eyes, gum-chewing, and any other distracting behavior.
Turn off your cell phone during the interview.
Preparing questions ahead of time for your interviewer will demonstrate that you are interested and engaged in the process
Use the STAR technique throughout for each answer: Situation/Task – situational examples with details and specificity Action – clear examples of what you actually did (observable behaviors) Results – how well the situation played out with measurable face-valid results
Make sure to listen to the questions carefully and take a second before jumping into an answer.
If your interview is over the phone, make sure you find a quiet space.
Step 3
Ask if there is anything in your background that might not qualify you for the position. Overcome any objections.
